The difference between CMYK and spot colors

CMYK is also called the printing color mode. As the name suggests, it is used for printing. Similar to RGB, the RBG mode is a light-emitting color mode, and CMYK is a color difference mode that relies on reflection.

How do we read the content of the newspaper? It is the light that shines on the newspaper and then reflects it in our eyes to see the content. It needs to have an external light source, if you are in a dark room you cannot read the newspaper.

As long as the image displayed on the screen is represented by the RGB mode. As long as the image seen on the printed matter is expressed in CMYK mode. For example, periodicals, magazines, newspapers, posters, etc. are all printed, so they are in CMYK mode.

CMY is the first letter of the names of three printing inks: Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow. And K takes the last letter of Black. The reason why the first letter is not taken is to avoid confusion with blue.

CMYK

Theoretically speaking, only three kinds of CMY inks are enough, and the three of them should be added together to get black. However, since the current manufacturing process cannot produce high-purity inks, the result of the addition of CMY is actually a dark Red, so you need to add a special black ink to reconcile it.

Spot color ink refers to a pre-mixed specific color ink (or special pre-mixed ink), used to replace or supplement CMYK ink, such as bright orange, green, fluorescent color, metallic gold and silver ink Etc., or it can be a hot stamping plate, a concave-convex plate, etc., or as a partial varnish plate, etc. It is not a mixture of CMYK four colors. Each spot color requires a special printing plate when printing (it can be simply understood as one Pay spot color film, and use spot color separately during printing), spot color means accurate color. Spot color means that when printing, the color is not synthesized by printing CMYK four colors, but a specific ink is used to print the color.

CMYK

The reason for adding black is that cyan, magenta, and yellow are not the three primary colors used in art, but magenta is lighter than red, and cyan is lighter than blue, so black cannot be easily obtained, and there is a chance of dark gray. Higher than dark red. Moreover, the color gamut of the four-color CMYK color matching of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black is larger than that of the three primary colors of blue, red, and yellow, so CMYK printing is widely used.

CMYK is not the first to use color printing, the early 3DSMAX also used the three primary colors of blue, red and yellow. Of course, another important reason is that high-purity blue, red, and yellow smoky crystals cannot be obtained with modern craftsmanship. Therefore, the manufacturer simply adjusts the required smoky crystals to three colors of cyan, magenta, and yellow, and then deliberately Add black smoky quartz.
